Welcome to Virginia Beach!

The Virginia Beach Oceanfront

With the longest beachfront access in the world, according the Guinness Book of World Records, you should be able to find plenty to do when you visit Virginia Beach oceanfront boardwalks and parks. The beach is so long that you can choose to be a part of one of the world class sporting events--and may even find yourself on television!--or spend a quite day virtually alone in peace with the waves. The Virginia Beach oceanfront is an entire resort complete with newly built amphitheater, night clubs, golf courses, the aquarium, and of course, an amusement park. Along with the regular attractions for travelers to this famous spot, there are special events through the summer months and into late fall as well. The Virginia Beach Neptune festival takes place the last weekend of September right on the boardwalk between 1st and 30th streets, and is home to the famous sandcastle contest and surfing exposition. Speaking of surfing, Virginia Beach oceanfront is also home to the annual East Coast Surfing Championship, where surfers from all over the world, including the diehard rock solid Australian surfers, come to match their skills in serious competition. Holiday Lights at the Beach is another event which draws travelers from all over. 250 light trimmed nautical parade floats, surfing Santa's, and the ability to drive right on the boardwalk contribute to this tourist attraction which happens in early December. Get there early, as thousands of people come to watch the display. Like to people watch? Atlantic Avenue is the area where the largest tourist beach meets the boardwalk, and the crowds can get huge. For a more private stay at the oceanfront, try Fort Story--the public beach is open on weekends, the parking is free, and the sand and surf are great. North end is a residential neighborhood where you are less likely to find the throngs of tourists that visit the beach each day. From 42nd street to 88th, the quiet makes up for the limited parking, but plan to get there early and don't illegally park--they will tow you! If you're a surfer, try Croatan Beach, Croatan Road. (Off General Booth Blvd, south of Rudee Inlet.) There is a designated surf area and free parking. For a family day at the beach without the crowds, go to Little Island Park and Sandbridge Beach. Its located far south of the tourist beach at the boardwalk, and has basketball courts, fishing, a picnic area, concessions, and playground equipment as well as swimming and surfing.

The Virginia Beach Towne Center

The Towne Center in Virginia Beach has changed much over the decades. What once was the hub of the community is still prominent, but now rather than being the center where the village gathered to hear trials and cast ballots, it has become one of the premiere destinations for travelers to the most populated--and according to The Guinness Book of World Records-- longest pleasure beaches in the world. While the center of town in Virginia Beach has existed since the mid 1800's, when railroads helped open up daily pathways for travelers to the famous beachfront, it was not incorporated as an actual city until 1952. Until then the town center literally was the center of town, where travelers could spend the night in bed and breakfasts before beginning their journey back to the surrounding areas of Princess Anne County after a relaxing weekend stay at the resorts along the beach. Today the Towne Center of Virginia Beach is an upscale place to live, work, visit, and shop. Shopping, outdoor musical events, the best hotels, and the eclectic restaurants make The Towne Center a one stop tourist attraction when visiting Virginia Beach. Shop at 346 Brooks Brothers, Anne Taylor Loft, Ficarra Jewelers, or The Honey Tree Children's Boutique for upscale purchasing in all your souvenir needs. The summer months bring outdoor events every day of the week, from acoustic rock to family face painting and story time. There is something for the entire family and a romantic evening awaits couples who stay and play here. For dining and entertainment, stop by Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, Zushi Japanese Bistro, or The Funnybone Comedy Club. Afterward, have dessert at The Cheesecake Factory. The Weston hotel is located in the heart of The Towne Center, so you'll be within walking distance of all of the attractions. After a day at Virginia's famous beach, spend the evening in Virginia's famous Towne Center.

Virginia Beach History

Virginia Beach 02 history.doc Virginia Beach as a resort town and Princess Anne County merged in 1963. Since that time, the population has steadily increased to just fewer than 450,000 as of the census of 2000. Along with seasonal tourists, which drive the overall population, the town has four military installations; Little Creek, Fort Story, Dam Neck, and Oceana Navel Air Station, making Virginia Beach population the 38th largest city in the United States and having the most people in the Commonwealth. This didn't used to be the case; in 1607 the first colonists that made up what is now called Cape Henry and the surrounding areas numbered less than one hundred people. By 1690 the first courthouse was built, and by 1692 the little settlement had grown to four counties. Although the population continued to grow, crime did not. The infamous pirate Blackbeard, in fact, having escaped justice for so many years, was captured, tried and hung here in 1719. There were also some accusations of witchcraft (Witchduck point is named after one of these unfortunate women, and a memorial statue is being erected to Grace Sherwood--the witch of Pungo--who was pardoned recently in July of 2006 by governor Tim Kaine) and the famous Bell house, where a family was tortured by an unseen entity for the duration of their natural lives. Virginia Beach history is rich with the flavor of the superstitions that came over with the original colonists, but now those settings are confined to the wonderful Historical Society of Virginia Beach. Crime, however, is almost non-existent for the size of the population today. Electronic police reports can be made online and Virginia Beach is the first city in the State of Virginia to earn the special award for Certified Crime Prevention Community, due to the involvement of the local neighborhoods in setting up and following through with crime prevention watches. Virginia Beach crime prevention includes a citizen's patrol and even a senior citizens patrol, making the city one of the safest per capita in the country.
