Norfolk, VA- Chrysler Museum of Art

The Chrysler Museum of Art is one of America’s great fine art museums. The museum was founded in 1939, making it 61 years old, and was known initially as the Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences. It still does contain science artifacts but mostly historical science artifacts that were related to the history in Norfolk. The museum mostly holds fine arts collection today.

The museum experienced explosive growth in 1971 when automobile and art collector Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. presented the city of Norfolk with his collection. Yes, Chrysler is the very same man who was behind Chrysler automobiles, today known as DaimlerChrysler. Since Chrysler’s death in 1989, the Museum continued to grow and expand, building on his legacy with regular additions to its holdings.

The Chrysler Museum of Art houses an encyclopedic collection of more than 30,000 objects spanning almost 4,000 years of art history. Visitors can enjoy an extensive collection of European and American paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts; a world-renowned glass collection, Art Nouveau furniture, works of art from African, Egyptian, Pre-Columbian, Islamic, and Asian cultures.

The museum also offers a list of exhibitions on contemporary and historical pieces, showcasing artists from around the world. Apart from its magnificent showcase, the museum also allows rental for any functions or occasions. Located near downtown Norfolk, it has a superb view of the Hague Inlet and the Elizabeth River.

Part of the museum is two of its historical houses that are a picturesque view of the 18th century house in Norfolk. The houses on display are the Moses Myers House and the Willoughby Baylor House. Each of these historical houses showcases a different historical aspect of Norfolk. The Moses Myers House showcases a collection of art that portrays an exceptionally accurate picture of the 18th Century life of a very affluent Jewish merchant and his family. The Willoughby Baylor house on the other hand presents thematic exhibits on the history of Norfolk and Hampton Roads.

A full schedule of free programs and activities including concerts, theatrical performances, children's tours, group tours, and lectures are also offered by the Chrysler Museum. The Museum houses the Jean Outland Chrysler Library, one of the largest art research libraries in the Southeast, as well as Phantoms Restaurant and an attractive gift shop.
