Norfolk, VA International Airport
Norfolk International Airport is a public airport located in Norfolk, Virginia, United States. It serves the entire Hampton Roads metropolitan area as well as Northeast North Carolina. Currently Norfolk International offers nearly 200 arrivals and departures daily to major cities throughout the United States. Presently, Norfolk International Airport ranks in the country’s top 65 airports in terms of passengers served annually. It was projected to have served 3.5million in 2004.
The airport currently does not handle any international passenger flights but has the ability to do so, hence the term International. However, to commemorate the 400th birthday celebration of Jamestown, VA, Monarch Airlines from the UK is staging a non-stop service between the airport and the community of Kent in England, starting in May 2007.
Aviation services in Hampton Roads started as early as 1903. And commercial flight started in 1923 with services of operating round trips to Washington and Philadelphia. It was in 1938 that the Norfolk Airport was built on what was previously a golf course. The first permanent terminal was completed in 1940. With World War II, the terminal played a significant role as a vital resource to the war effort.
In 1976, the airport was given the name Norfolk International Airport and construction towards the 21st century was on full stride. The airport started expanding and cultivating a botanical garden in its surrounding. The airport has since become the international model for balancing development and nature.
In 1991, Norfolk International completed a new concourse extension comprised of 10 additional gates, for a total of 24 gates. A new state-of-the-art fire station and new FAA air traffic control tower facility also began operation. To take advantage of the ever-changing computer age, Norfolk International was the first airport to develop its own web site, and new Internet access booths were installed to let travelers plug in and log on for e-mail, banking, business, or reservations.
The airport is divided into two concourses, which connects to the main terminal and arrivals terminal – Concourse A for international arrivals and Concourse B for domestic flights. In 2002, a 133 million dollar project was completed with a 243,000 square foot arrivals building with an automated baggage handling system; a 2,850-space covered parking garage; runway and taxiway rehabilitation and upgrades; main terminal lobby refurbishment; and a new food/beverage and retail concession program.
Future expansion of long-term parking, air cargo and general aviation facilities in addition to the construction of an additional runway are key elements to the Airport's master plan. All of these improvements have been designed and carefully scheduled to become a reality before the need is critical.
