Norfolk, VA- Naval Station
Naval Station Norfolk situated in Norfolk, Virginia is a base of the United States Navy. It supports naval forces operating in the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean. The station is also known as Norfolk Navy Base and it occupies 4,300 acres (17km2) in one of Hampton Roads real estate known locations as Sewell’s Point. It is the world’s largest Naval Station; in fact it is known to be the largest naval installation in the world!
75 ships and 134 aircraft were ported here, they are along side one of the 13 piers inside of one of the 11 hangars for repair, refit and training. This provided the crew an opportunity to be with their families as the Navy crews while on duty are usually set off to sea for a long period of time. NS Norfolk is homeport to aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers, large amphibious ships, submarines, a variety of supply and logistic ships, C-2 Greyhounds, C-9 Sky train II, Seahawk Helicopters and many more.

Port Services control more than 3,100 ships' movements annually as they arrive and depart their berths. Port facilities extend more than four miles along the waterfront and include some seven miles of pier and wharf space. NAVSTANORVA’s Nimitz Hall is a major stopping off point for people destined for ships, aircraft squadrons and stations overseas.
NS Norfolk was originally located at the site of the 1907 Jamestown Expedition a mammoth 300th anniversary celebration of the establishment of the first permanent English settlement in America in 1607. During the Jamestown Exposition, high-ranking naval officers agreed that this site was ideal for naval activity. After the United States entered World War I in April 1917, the Secretary of the Navy was persuaded to buy the property.
Daily tours of the naval station are conducted every half hour from 10am to 2pm. The tour departs from the Naval Tour and Information Center located at 9079 Hampton Blvd. Bus tours conducted by Navy personnel ride past aircraft carriers, destroyers, submarines, frigates, and amphibious assault ships. The tour also drives by historic homes from the 1907 Jamestown Exposition. Unfortunately, you will not be able to get on board a ship of this fleet, you can however make up for it by going on board USS Wisconsin docked in downtown Norfolk though. And cameras are allowed.
