Norfolk, VA- Norfolk Admirals
The Norfolk Admirals are an ice hockey team in the American Hockey League. They play in Norfolk, Virginia, USA at the Norfolk Scope. The Norfolk Scope is a 12,600-seat multipurpose arena located on the edge of downtown Norfolk, Virginia, USA. The Norfolk Scope was designed by renowned Italian architect/engineer Pier Luigi Nervi and constructed in 1971 at a cost of $28.1 million (Approximately $140 million in 2006 dollars).
The Norfolk Admirals were founded in 2000-2001 and wear the colors red, black and white as their uniform color. Current NHL players who have been Norfolk Admirals include Chicago Blackhawks Mark Bell, Rene Bourque, Pavel Vorobiev, Tyler Arnason, Duncan Keith, Michal Barinka, Brent Seabrook, and Craig Anderson. Players elsewhere in the league who played in Norfolk include Vern Fiddler (Nashville Predators), Aaron Downey (St. Louis Blues), Nathan Perrott (Dallas Stars), Kyle Calder (Philadelphia Flyers) and Michael Leighton (Anaheim Ducks).
Currently the head coach for the Norfolk Admirals is Mike Haviland. And the general manager who is managing the team is Al Maclsaac. Since this is a new team, the Norfolk Admirals are always looking for new members to join. Currently, they have education programs in high schools around Norfolk to help students study as well as helping to motivate them to study better. The Admirals stress the importance of education and reading, and participate in educational programs in the Community, including National Reading Month. Admirals players periodically visit local schools to read to students, share different languages and cultures diversities, and give geography lessons.
The Norfolk Admirals are a “farm team” for the NHL. A farm team is a team under a team where rookie players go to before they get chosen to play for their league, which is what their Youth Hockey program is all about. The Youth Hockey program is open to all youths in Norfolk, for a fee of $7 per team.
The Norfolk Admirals are affiliated with Chicago Black Hawk’s (NHL) and Toledo Storm (ECHL). Currently they have no titles or leagues won yet, except for two division wins.
