Norfolk, Virginia Annual Events
Norfolk, Virginia presents some very interesting annual events that have tickled the interest of many. Some events have pulled more than thousands of tourists each year to Norfolk and it is no wonder why people keep returning to Norfolk year after year. The city is always buzzing with new activities.
At the end of every June, there is the Bayou Boogalou and Cajun Food Festival held in Norfolk every year. The town transforms into a New Orleans Bayou during this month. The southwestern cookout pays homage to good ol’ favorites like Southern Fried Chicken, Collard Greens, Jambalayas, deep fried crayfish and catfish, and caramelized sweet potatoes, as they would say, “It’s just like how Momma use to make it!”. Every June this food festival takes over Town Point Park and swarms of hungry event goers get to fill up on great food in an outdoorsy joint. Of course, no food event is going to be complete without entertainment. Artists from around the states have dropped in to perform for the crowd and, of course, to savor on the fine southwestern Cajun cooking!
The Annual Norfolk Jazz Festival is one of those events that are held annually in Norfolk every year in early August, usually around the 4th and the 5th. Dates may vary year after year of course but it has not deterred the turnout for the event. The jazz festival is held at Norfolk’s Town Point Park, where some of the world’s best performers treat spectators to live music in a spectacular outdoor setting. Artists from the past who have come to perform in this festival were Blue Miracle, Maceo Parker, Robert Jospe, killer piano player Marcia Ball and the `king of blues'... Bo Diddley. The jazz festival is a great mix of Jazz and Blues, which makes the event a smooth and soulful one near the waterfront.
There is also the Annual Children’s Festival held every October. It is definitely the most enjoyed family festival in Norfolk with parents and children engaging in fun and exciting activities. General admission for this is only $3 and it is worth every cent as kids love this event. You can dress up in your favorite Halloween costume (it is held in October after all) and take part in a costume parade. This parade caters to children from age 2 to 10 years and loads of cartoon characters are also present at the event to entertain kids.
Last but not least, an event geared towards the adult crowd is the Annual Wine Festival. For a weekend during late October crowds of people gather in the park to sample great wine. It is a great place for wine enthusiasts and wine connoisseurs to indulge in different grapes from different regions around the world. Gourmet food is also available at the vicinity to go with the wines offered and promoted. With food, comes wine. Choose a variety of cheeses, seafood, pasta and fruits to compliment your wine of choice. This event has sold out every year.
