Norfolk, VA Public Schools

Norfolk as the largest metropolitan in the Hampton Roads region naturally has much more to offer with regards to education. There are more for parents, students and the community as the educational programs and schools capitalize on the urban advantages that Norfolk has to offer – location, diversity and facilities.

Norfolk Public Schools recently received a 2005 National Academic Award for having one of the most outstanding public school systems in the nation. Parents thinking about sending their children to any of the public schools in Norfolk can expect only the highest quality of education. The city is home to 5 high schools, 8 middle schools, 34 elementary schools, and 9 special-purpose/preschools. Norfolk Academy is the only private school in Norfolk. All 49 public schools are under the board of Norfolk Public Schools. Norfolk is also home to Old Dominion University, Eastern Virginia Medical School, and Norfolk State University (fifth largest black university in America); Virginia Wesleyan College, a private liberal arts college, shares its eastern border with the neighboring city of Virginia Beach.

Over the past 9 years, scores for All Standard Learning has increased markedly. This is based on the data collected in 2005-2006. And over 99% of the students studying in Norfolk Public Schools experience no incident of physical violence. If you are looking for a safe and an excellent school for you child, almost every public school in Norfolk is a safe bet.

Old Dominion University (ODU) is a university located in Norfolk, Virginia. It was established in 1930 as the Norfolk Division of the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. ODU awarded its first bachelor's degrees in 1956 and became an independent institution in 1962. It is one of the best universities in the Southeast by the Princeton Review. Old Dominion provides seven colleges for students to obtain a degree from any subject that interests them. There are more than 65 undergraduate programs available for students.

The Eastern Virgin Medical School is a public medical school. Its campus includes Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, the region's primary tertiary medical care facility, and the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, a regional pediatric referral care facility. Reproductive medicine and research in pediatrics, geriatrics, diabetes, and cancer are among the areas where EVMS excels in.
