The Virginia Children’s Festival is an event catered to children around Hampton Roads, Virginia. It is held in Norfolk every year as a way for children to interact, learn and grow. It is one of those events whereby the Norfolk community organizes in respect to promoting healthy family and community bond.

The festival is sponsored by Cingular Wireless, a telecommunication company in America. The festival is now the most popular and beloved family event of the year. It used to be held at Norfolk’s Town Point Park but venues change from time to time and sometimes it is held at the MacArthur Center Mall. The festival is targeted at children from age 10 and younger.

The Virginia Children’s Festival offers more than 50 creative reading related workshops that are designed to demonstrate the importance of reading through the art of storytelling. Reading activities includes various genres of medium where children can learn that “READING IS FUN,” which is also the main theme during the festival. Plays and comedies targeted at children are held in places like the Old Dominion Education Department, The Norfolk Public Library and Southside Boys and Girls Club’s, and Seussville Book Nook, which is the latest addition to the festival.

REACH (Reading Enriches All Children) is part of the event as well whereby free books are given away and sessions on how to make bookmarks are organized to make children more inclined to reading. There are also various creative spots like Art Yard, Adventureland, Fantasyland, Toddlertown, Friendship Path, and Animal Alley. Each area will feature events and activities that pertain to the traditions of Storytelling and the importance of reading. In addition, there are educational displays, cultural performances, and arts and crafts that are designed to celebrate the festival’s theme of “Reading is Fun.”
